MFABENI/MISSION ROCKS

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site is made up of five discrete ecosystems most of which can be found on the Eastern Shores. The reserve also encompasses a large diversity of fauna and flora including four of the big five;

white and black rhino, leopard, buffalo and elephant.

The Wetland Authority and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife are in joint management of this
Park and are currently out sourcing all eco-tourism functions to private enterprises. The conservation management of the Park will remain the function of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Things to do in the Park:

  • Throughout the Eastern Shores there are designated game viewing tracks which are clearly marked. Management tracks which are marked with “no entry” signs are prohibited.

  • At Mission Rocks one can relax and enjoy a spectacular view overlooking the southern part of the lake in the west and the ocean on the eastern side. During certain times of the year migratory whales can be observed from this viewing point. Picnic tables are available for use.

  • Visit the Rocky Shores at Mission Rocks to look at the fascinating marine life that inhabits this unique environment . Mission Rocks beach is also a popular fishing spot but snorkeling and swimming are not advisable. Should one wish to catch a tan or enjoy a stroll on the beach, walk along the rocks 500m north from the beach entrance where you will find a sandy, open beach.

  • North of Mission Rocks (23 km) one can visit Cape Vidal, a popular holiday destination for beach lovers. Cape Vidal bay is suitable for snorkeling and swimming at low tide, however there are no lifeguards or shark nets on this beach and activities are done at your own risk. Cape Vidal is suitable for walking, fishing and ski-boating and for the energetic, there is a short walk leading to a whale viewing tower.

  • Private Tour Operators can be contacted to arrange the following activities:

  1. Game viewing day trips or night drives
  2. Horse back safaris (day or overnight)
  3. Turtle Tours (Seasonal).

  • Walking Trails: Please note that the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority has taken over all trails/walks and the contact numbers for the Authority are 035 590 1633 or 035 590 1528.
