WEENEN / SPIOENKOP / MONKS COWL
7 DAY CAMPING-BUSH BATTLEFIELDS / BERG
DAYS ONE, TWO AND THREE
WEENEN GAME RESERVE
Enter Weenen and after booking in, select a site under a spreading acacia with views across
the grassland that stretch off into the distant blue hills. Although Weenen is a relatively small
reserve it has an excellent range of animals including black and white rhino and a bird list that
numbers 251 species. Over your next two days at Weenen you need to plan to make the most of the
experience. Very early morning and late evening game viewing drives are best for seeing the
abundant wildlife in this small gem of a reserve. There are two hiking trails, the iMpofu at 2kms
and the Beacon View Trail which is 3kms long and which rewards your efforts with 360 degrees of
magnificent views.
Guided trails can be booked at the office and these will take you into the wilder parts of the
reserve. These trails are best after the dew has been burnt off by the sun and could take place
after your early morning drive and breakfast. There are three excellent picnic sites in the
reserve, each with its own special character and they make ideal venues for breakfasts and
lunches.
DAYS FOUR AND FIVE
SPIOENKOP GAME RESERVE
Spioenkop is a bushveld reserve wrapped around the very scenic Spioenkop dam,
overlooked by the brooding Spioenkop Mountain, the scene of a fierce battle between the Boer forces
and the British who were trying to relieve the siege of Ladysmith. During your two day stay at
Spioenkop, plan to drive around the dam and up the mountain to the memorials on the battle ground
to the 390 young men who tragically lost their lives in two days of bloody fighting. The reserve
has an excellent range of wildlife including white rhino, giraffe and many antelope which makes
game viewing drives and walks along the Discovery trail very rewarding. The dam offers good sailing
and boating opportunities and is a valued angling venue with a range of freshwater fish being
regularly caught. Horse riding is available and seeing game from horse back is a new and exciting
experience. Your campsite offers excellent views of the water and the mountain and is a relaxing
spot to enjoy the best of outdoor living.
DAYS SIX AND SEVEN
MONKS COWL
UKHAHLAMBA DRAKENSBERG PARK
As you drive from Spioenkop to Monks Cowl, both Winterton and Bergville towns have well
stocked supermarkets to replenish your supplies. Monks Cowl is a very scenic part of the northern
Berg with lots of forests and streams. As you book in, obtain a copy of the trails booklet so that
you can plan your exploration of this beautiful part of this World Heritage Site. These trails wind
through deep valleys and forests and can take from 3 hours to overnight above the escarpment. There
is something for every taste and level of fitness.
In spring and summer the wild flowers cover the mountain slopes and in winter the crisp
mornings and fine days encourage you to walk further and higher.
