BEACH WILDLIFE
These unspoilt pristine beaches offer the visitor a wealth of wildlife experiences. Bird life is spectacular. Marine life in all its forms on the shores and beneath the waves is diverse and stunning. The fascinating coastal dune forest with beautiful old trees provides a wealth of habitats for birds and animals. Here the cry of the fish eagle is often heard, while monkeys, bushpig and small antelope abound.

Occasionally an otter or a ratel is seen by a lucky visitor. Some of the beaches have estuaries where fish and other sea creatures come to spawn. These estuaries are often lined with mangrove swamps where crocodiles and occasionally hippo can be spotted.

The Key elements include habitats such as estuaries, mangroves, swamp forest, vleis, pans, coastal forest, grasslands and coral reefs. Animals include crocodiles, hippo, rhino, buffalo and elephants and various species of antelope. The waters teem with the marine equivalent of the big five and include massive marlin and other game fish. Migrating humpback whales, whale sharks, ragged toothed sharks and turtles are often spotted.

There are turtle tours run by concessionaires during the summer months of November to March and breeding leatherback and loggerhead turtles can be seen on these tours at night. Special wildlife experiences: include whale watching, the turtle tours, scuba diving, wilderness trails and the Santa Lucia launch, at St Lucia estuary which offers visitors a tour of the estuary and can accommodate 80 people at a time.
