The country-wide ban on vehicles driving on the beaches of South Africa became effective at
midnight on Sunday 20 Janyary 2002.
Coastal protected areas under the control of KZN Wildlife are affected by the ban which will
be enforced in accordance with the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 and the
notification of the ban as published in Government Notice no: 22690 dated 21 December 2001.
KZN Wildlife, as the agency responsible for enforcing the application of the new law in areas
under its control, appeals to all people using the coastal parks of KZN to abide by this new law,
as the penalties for transgression as laid down in the Government Notice are severe - ranging from
fines to the confiscation of vehicles.

ski-boats in a demarcated Boat Launching Site, emergency and scientific research, certain tour
operators, and conservation management vehicles.
