BEACH ACTIVITIES
The beaches along the the KwaZulu-Natal coast offer a paradise for fishermen, snorkellers,
scuba divers, birders and game viewers alike.
Simply watching the waves or looking at the fish in the unspoilt rocky pools along the shore
is a soul restoring pastime. Among the many activities available to visitors are Fishing with
destinations that include Cape Vidal, Sodwana, Kosi Bay, Maphalane, Umlalazi and St Lucia Estuary.
Ski-boaters and shore anglers have the opportunity of catching a variety of fish including
game fish such as marlin and sailfish. Popular ski-boat fishing competitions are held at Sodwana
Bay and Cape Vidal during the year and Sodwana has produced record billfish and sailfish.
The rocky intertidal areas at Maphelana, Umlalazi and Mission Rocks provide opportunities for
musseling and crayfishing. Diving / Snorkelling Sodwana, Cape Vidal, Kosi Bay and Mabibi. The
diversity of fish and invertebrates on Africa's southern-most coral reefs attract many scuba divers
and there are excellent snorkelling spots along the the coast north of Cape Vidal.
Game viewing / Walking / Hiking : Self guided trails wander through coastal forest and reward
the visitor with sightings of many birds and small animals. Come aboard the 80 seater Santa Lucia
launch and explore one of the great natural wonders on Africa - the wetland world of Lake St Lucia.
This lake is the home of some 800 hippo, the Nile crocodile and an astonishing diversity of
ecosystems, birds and wildlife.
Wilderness Trails The 4 day Kosi Bay hiking trail circumnavigates the Kosi Bay lake system
which is rich in bird and plant life. Highlights of this trail are the opportunity to snorkel in
the 'aquarium' of the estuary mouth, swim, snorkel and fish off the beach and in the turtle nesting
season from November to March, the opportunity to watch the female leatherback and loggerhead
turtles lay their eggs on the beach.
The 4 day St Lucia wilderness trail runs from April to September. The area in which the
trails are conducted is particularly scenic and ecologically unique, ranging from wetland to dune
forest. Birdlife is plentiful and a large variety of flowers, including lilies and orchids can be
seen during spring (September).
During the summer months from November to March concessionaires run turtle tours from St
Lucia Estuary, Cape Vidal and Sodwana Bay. Departure times vary with the tides.
