VERNON CROOKES - ACCOMMODATION OVERVIEW
The beautiful Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve is a secluded coastal getaway just inland of
Umzinto and Scottburgh. The nature reserve is renowned for its bio-diversity, with densely wooded
slopes, open grassland ridges and magnificent views of the ocean.
Amazingly this small coastal reserve boasts 56 mammal species including zebra, blue
wildebeest, bushbuck, blesbok, oribi, reedbuck, blue duiker, black-backed jackal, vervet monkeys,
rock hyrax, tree hyrax, caracal, four mongoose species and porcupine.
It is a great treat for families to discover the wildlife together in a safe environment while
enjoying some of the self-guided trails. Some 300-bird species have been sighted including crowned
and marshall eagle.
Vernon Crookes Camp has one twenty-bed rustic tree house that features three bedrooms, a
kitchen, a lounge/dining area and communal bathroom facilities. Guests should bring their own
bedding and towels. In addition five fully equipped two-bed rondavels are set snugly into the
wooded hillside. The camp has a communal, fully equipped kitchen, ablution facility and lounge.
Satellite television is available in the lounge for guests. The camp is ideal for study groups or
mini conferences, with the lounge available as a conference venue.
