SPIOENKOP GAME RESERVE - HUNTING
The creation of a Controlled Hunting Area (CHA) within the Spioenkop Reserve came about in
June 1991 with approval for the north shore of the dam to be used for hunting. The Controlled
Hunting Area is 1200 ha in extent and lies on the lower slopes of Spioenkop Mountain. The
topography consists of undulating plains, rising up the slopes, and becoming steeper higher up the
mountain.
The vegetation varies from Acacia Karroo thickets through to Acacia Sieberiana woodlands and
tall dry grassland. The utilisation of the area is zoned to encompass two forms of recreation.
During the winter months hunters hunt animals scheduled to be removed as surplus to the areas
ecological carrying capacity.During the summer months, tourists occupy the camp using it as a base
for walks and trails and game viewing throughout the area.
The "iPika" camp is built overlooking a waterhole on the slopes of Spioenkop Mountain. The
facilities include a centrally situated lounge, a fully equipped kitchen, two tents on raised
wooden platforms, each sleeping two persons, together with an ablution block with hot and cold
running water. No dogs are allowed in the Controlled Hunting Area, or the Reserve.
KZN Wildlife normally offers the following species for hunting through a public tender
