Facilities:
There is no shop or other similar facilities in the reserve.
The nearest town where limited supplies may be purchased is Golela which is half a kilometer from the entrance gate.
The nearest town with a full range of facilities including doctors is Pongola which is 40 kms away.

The campsite is approximately 2 kms from the reserve entrance gate.

Climate: The area experiences a hot humid tropical climate with summer rains and a dry winter season. Rain occurs mostly as thunderstorms which frequently come from the south-west. Dense valley mists, which are intensified by cold air drainage from the Lebombo mountains, range onto the plain at night and in the early mornings cause heavy dew.

With both crocodiles and hippos in the dam swimming is prohibited.

Phongolo falls within a malaria area and visitors are advised to take suitable precautions.

How to get there
the reserve can be reached from the N2 between Pongola and Mkuze. Take the Golela turn-off to Swaziland for 10 kms. At Golela take the road turning right and follow this road to the main entrance gate.
