EMAKHOSINI OPHATHE HERITAGE PARK - WILDLIFE
With its large range of habitats the park supports a variety of animals including black and
white rhino, buffalo, leopard, hyaena, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, kudu, blue wildebeest, nyala,
bushbuck, warthog, impala and Nguni cattle.
A robust list of bird species can be observed in the reserve namely, blue crane, ground
hombills, bald ibis, secretary bird, black eagle, marshall eagle and vultures, which are known to
roost in Umfolozi Game Reserve and are often seen flying overhead.
Bird and game viewing opportunities by two wheel drive vehicle in the Ophathe section of the
park are good. For the more adventurous at heart, there is a rugged 4X4 trail which continues deep
into the Ophathe section of the park and which traverses the rugged landscape of the White Umfolozi
River catchment.
