CHELMSFORD (NTSHINGWAYO DAM) AND NCANDU NATURE RESERVE - CAMP SITE
Chelmsford Nature Reserve is situated on the Ngagane River in Northern KwaZulu-Natal less than
three hours drive from Gauteng. It is the third largest dam in KwaZulu-Natal and is an excellent
venue for swimming and relaxing in the sun as well as enjoying various water sports, including
water skiing, jet skiing, kite surfing, canoeing and boating.
Fresh water fishing provides excellent opportunities to catch carp and scalies. The nature
reserve offers excellent game viewing opportunities, with large herds of springbok, blesbok and red
hartebeest, as well as a significant population of the rare and elusive oribi antelope. Chelmsford
boasts two fully electrified campsites, Leokop with 10 sites and Sandford with 21 sites, which are
placed with views of the dam and the waterfront. Tents and caravans can be accommodated and
barbecue facilities are available. The modern ablutions have hot showers and baths, flush toilets
and basins with washing facilities for dishes and laundry. Chalet accommodation is also available.
A four-bed rustic mountain hut is available for overnight accommodation at Ncandu Nature Reserve,
only forty kilometres from Chelmsford tucked into the northern Drakensberg. Tel/Fax: (034) 351 1753
