MKUZE GAME RESERVE - HUNTING

In 1987 KZN Wildlife established a hunting area known as the Mkhuze Controlled Hunting Area(CHA). As a result, KZN Wildlife now makes various pre-determined hunting packages available to both local and international hunters during the winter months.

The CHA, an area of 4 500 ha, shares a common boundary with the Mkhuze Game Reserve which is 34000 ha in extent. Mkhuze Game Reserve is situated in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal, approximately 335 km north of Durban, near the village of Mkuze. The area is fenced on three sides and has the unfenced Msunduzl River as its northern boundary. Game moves freely between the reserve and the CHA throughout the year .The topography and vegetation of the area varies from hilly terrain which is sparsely covered with trees, to low-lying fever tree forests, thickets and vleis which are separated by relics of dune forest. There are natural pans in the area that attract considerable numbers of game and a wide variety of bird life.

Large mammals which occur naturally in the CHA include nyala, impala, common reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, blue wildebeest, zebra, kudu, suni, red duiker, warthog, bushpig, bushbuck, black rhino and white rhino.

The Umkhumbi Tented Bush Lodge (Zulu for red duiker) is built opposite a natural pan in the CHA. It consists of four large safari tents, each containing two beds, a wardrobe, bedside tables, a gun safe and a small refrigerator. An en-suite shower, washbasin and toilet ensure complete privacy for visitors. A thatched wood and reed lounge, diningroom and bar have been constructed to give visitors the enjoyment of a typical bush camp in a traditional African setting. The modern, well-equipped kitchen adjoining the complex has a refrigerator, deep-freeze, stove, cutlery, crockery and all cooking utensils. A staff member is on duty to service the camp and take care of cleaning and washing up. A modern abattoir, which is equipped with an electric hoist and facilities to dress carcasses and hang fresh meat, as well as a cold room, is located close to the camp. A trophy room has also been built to facilitate the professional handling of trophies. The camp complex is serviced by mains electricity. Accommodation is also available for four additional staff members who accompany hunters. This comprises a rondavel equipped with a bed and mattress for each person and communal ablution and cooking facilities.
