MIDMAR DAM - OVERVIEW
CAMPSITES
There are three separate campgrounds within the resort, of which two have water
frontage. At present two of the campgrounds have limited electrical plug point facilities. All
sites are served by communal ablution blocks, with hot and cold running water.
This beautiful dam on the Umgeni River is situated next to Howick in the middle of
the Midlands Meander (an association of rural businesses selling curios, art, crafts, foodstuffs
and furniture and providing restaurants and accommodation.) This tranquil setting provides
opportunities for a wide variety of sporting activities, including water sports, cycling, walking,
game viewing, angling or just lying back at one of the many picnic sites with the tantalising smell
of many barbecues wafting through the air and the green hills of KwaZulu Natal framed between water
and sky. Midmar hosts the Annual Midmar Mile which is the largest open water swimming event in the
world as well as a large number of provincial and National Triathlons and sailing events. The
Henley Midmar Yacht club has organised races on most weekends and has excellent facilities for the
sailing faternity.
A boat shop where cycles, windsurfers, canoes and yachts can be hired is open during weekends
and peak periods. Launch tours and sunset cruises are available, subject to prior arrangement.
ACCOMMODATION
Thirty two fully-equipped chalets (including a six bedded chalet especially equipped for the
handicapped) provide comfortable accommodation in a scenic area overlooking the dam. These chalets
are all equipped with DSTV. In addition, sixteen rustic cabins, are available to the visitor. These
are equipped with refrigerators and electric stoves, but have communal ablution facilities.
