Special Precautions:
Maphelana is in a malaria area and special precautions are necessary.

The nearest town which has a full range of services is Kwambonambi which is 50 kms away.

How to get there:
Maphelana is 50 kms from the N2 between Empangeni and Mtubatuba opposite the Kwambonambi turn off. The road is narrow and very sandy in places and is not suitable for vehicles with a low clearance.

The following vehicle restrictions apply on the road:
Vehicles not exceeding 1.5 tonnes
Boats not exceeding 5,79 metres
Caravans of a single axle class only and only if towed by a four wheeled drive vehicle.

Motor Bikes, Quad Bikes, Private Generators and Jet Skis are not permitted into the reserve.

Only vehicles launching boats from a trailer are allowed on the beach.

Pets are not permitted into the reserve.

"No entry fees will be charged for visits by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Primary and Secondary School groups, from KZN Schools to KZN Protected Areas and St Lucia Crocodile Centre provided that such visits:
1. are authorised by the Head of the school
2. are booked in advance with the Officer in Charge of the Protected Area or Crocodile Centre
3. do not take place over weekends, during KZN Provincial school holidays or Public Holidays".
