CHELMSFORD (NTSHINGWAYO DAM) AND NCANDU NATURE RESERVE - HUNTING
The area in which the hunting takes place is in excess of 1 000 ha and is made up of tall
grassveld with very little cover, the exception being small clumps of wattle trees. The entire area
is bounded on one side by Chelmsford dam water body, while the other is bounded by
farmland.
The Controlled Hunting Area offers accommodation in the form of a 7 bed chalet. The chalet is
fully equipped with all bedding as well as a fridge, stove, deep freeze, cutlery, crockery and
cooking utensils. Staff members are on hand to assist with cleaning and washing-up in the chalets.
A gun safe is available on request. A skinning area is available with running water. A safe meat
store as well as a lockable trophy shed is available. No cold room facilities are available but
extremely cold nights are experienced with mild days, so no problems should occur with meat hung
for at least three days. No skinners or salt are available at the CHA.
Hunters are to liaise with the OIC before their arrival at Richgate. The main office at
Chelmsford Nature Reserve on the northern side of the dam has beer, soft drinks and a limited range
of groceries are available.
A four wheel drive vehicle is not essential.
Prospective hunters must obtain licences prior to arrival as none are available at Chelmsford
Nature Reserve.
The Field Ranger accompanying hunters is in radio contact with the Officer- in-Charge of
Chelmsford.
No public telephone is available but access to a phone is available in an emergency. Ask the
Field Ranger.
