BEACHWOOD MANGROVES - OVERVIEW
The reserve is a National Monument 76 hectares in extent and was proclaimed in 1977. It
consists of mangrove swamp forest and important estuarine habitat at the mouth of the Umgeni River
in Durban. Plant and animal life in the mangrove forest can be viewed on a trail through this
ecosystem.
The southern area, near the Umgeni estuary, has an activities centre and separate thatched
gazebo which are available to educational groups and other interested parties. A rustic bird hide
is situated along a trail in the mangrove swamp.
There is a boardwalk into the mangrove forest from which one can view the wildlife.A footbridge
crosses the river along the path to the sea shore. No accommodation, caravanning or camping
facilities are available in the reserve.
