WILDLIFE PARKS - VITAL INFORMATION
Wildlife Parks or Game Reserves as they are known locally are situated in the warm
sub-tropical areas of KwaZulu-Natal. Summers are hot and humid with frequent rainfall often in the
form of thunderstorms. Winters are hot and dry though it can get quite cold especially at night.
Many Wildlife Parks are situated in malaria areas so it is advisable to take suitable precautions
including externally applied insect repellant in the evenings and at night when it is also useful
to burn a mosquito coil in your room. Please consult you medical doctor.
Apart from crocodiles and hippos, water bodies like pans and rivers harbour the bilharzia
parasite so swimming is out of the question with the exception of the swimming pools found in many
of our camps.
One of the special activities available to visitors is the opportunity to walk through the
African bush and experience the sights and sounds of a primordial landscape. Whether it is a
morning walk or something longer like a four day wilderness trail, it is recommended that
precautions be taken against ticks and pepperticks by the use of a specialised tick repellant
sprayed on clothing and foot wear. If wearing shorts and/or open shoes then apply liberal amounts
of a repellant designed to be applied to the skin.
Visitors game viewing from their vehicles should carry liquids such as water or soft drinks
especially on hot summer days and be aware that ablution facilities are only available at hides,
picnic sites and camps and having to answer a call of nature away from these areas is both
dangerous and illegal as one is not allowed to get out of the vehicle except in designated areas.
Remember that all wild animals are unpredictable and dangerous.
Check the gate opening and closing times before travelling.
Check the distance to the nearest fuel supply.
Suggested items to bring with you:
Torch, bird book, binoculars, camera, insect repellant, hat and sunglasses.
The sun can be very hot all year round and hats and sun cream are recommended especially for
for pale or sensitive skins.
