SAFETY
People joining KZN Wildlife trails have obvious concerns with regard to possible dangers
on trail. Most have heard many elaborate stories of man eating lions, rogue elephant bulls and so
on. It seems to be in the nature of Man to focus on the dramatic, the spectacular and the macabre
aspects of life. Wilderness trails are so different to this. On trail, especially in areas like
Imfolozi Game Reserve, one will be walking on foot in so called "Big Five Areas". Big Five,
unfortunately, is a term and concept which people seeking solace in wilderness areas have accepted
by default, but which has no particular relevance to a wilderness trail. The "Big Five" concept
derives from hunting in Africa, the so called "Big Five" being the five most dangerous animals.
While walking in wild areas of Africa on trail, we aim at blending in and harmonising with
the environment, and finding our niche in the cycle of life. We, in a sense, are seeking in a small
way to rediscover primitive roots. As we show a respect for the wildlife and move in subservience,
as opposed to dominance, as is a common habit of modern man, we find nature very forgiving and
accepting. Experienced wilderness guides will lead you through the wilderness in such a way that
you will feel secure and re-discover being "at one" with all around you.
There are many small bugs and creatures that you might be concerned about as well; malaria
mosquito's, tick borne diseases, scorpions, snakes, spiders etc. This is Africa and these things do
exist. However, for most of these, precautions can be taken before you arrive, and for the other's,
precautions are taken on trail, led by the wilderness guide. You will be well looked after and will
enjoy a wonderful, wholesome experience.
A basic, although not extreme level of fitness is required as you will be walking up to 12
Kms per day over variable terrain. We try to accommodate all types and ages of people and this
should not be restrictive, as long as you get in some good walking practice before arriving.
