uKHAHLAMBA DRAKENSBERG PARK - MOUNT CURRIE CAMP SITE
The scenic Mount Currie Nature Reserve featuring grassy undulating hills dotted with
protea species and cool montane forest patches is a wonderfully quiet and restful East Griqualand
Nature Reserve. Crystal Dam is a wonderful place for boating, birding and fresh water
fishing.
Mount Currie is the only formally protected area in East Griqualand and attracts visitors who
enjoy relaxing in a scenic setting, walking or indulging in a little bird watching.
Mount Currie boasts a bird list of over 220 species, with the rare striped flufftail common in
the wetter areas and bearded vultures frequently spotted whilst climbing Mount Currie, which
dominates the reserve.
The history of the reserve is interesting enough to warrant National Monument status, as the
reserve stands on an historic laager site surrounded by the graves of early pioneer settlers.
A further monument inside the reserve pays tribute to former Boy Scouts who fell in action in
East Africa during the First World War. The peaceful and secure campsite features ten large shady
sites with shared coldwater taps, barbecue facilities with firewood for sale and electrical plug
points.
The ablutions feature hot water, flush toilets, plug points for electric razors, dishwashing
and laundry basins. Tel: (039) 727 3844.
