MAPHELANA - ACCOMMODATION OVERVIEW
Maphelana is the southernmost camp in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and is tucked away
into a sheltered bay on the south bank of the Mfolozi River estuary. It has long been a popular
coastal break-away for campers, ski boaters, snorklers, spear fishermen and surf anglers.
Magnificent walks can be enjoyed through dense coastal forest in the area and avid birders can
look out for more than 200 bird species which have been recorded. Vast stretches of pristine beach
offer fantastic opportunities to those who enjoy a long walk with the occasional dip in the sea to
cool off. Beach walkers can also gather mussels off the rocks and crayfish can also be caught using
snorkels.
The sheltered bay provides a good launch site for ski-boats. Two self-guided trails can be
followed, one along the estuary bank and the other to the top of the coastal dunes offering
breathtaking views across the ocean and river mouth. Maphelana camp features ten recently renovated
five-bed log cabins, with two bedrooms, bathrooms with showers, fully equipped kitchenettes and
lounge/dining rooms. Barbecue facilities are also available for each cabin.
The camp also provides camping facilities. It is recommended that visitors confine their
swimming and snorkelling to periods of low tide.
