SODWANA / MKHUZE / FALSE BAY
7 DAYS CAMPING
Selfdrive Routes

A camping holiday that combines the best of sea, wildlife and lake, some of the most scenic sites on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

DAY ONE
SODWANA BAY

Arriving at Sodwana make your way to the office and book in. Once you have set up camp, go to the Coral Divers site and book your dive for the following morning. Checking on the tides, drive to the beach and get in a few hours of surf fishing on either side of low water.

DAY TWO
SODWANA BAY

The next morning meet your diving instructor on the beach and dive on some of the southern most coral reefs in the world. Loggerheads, leatherbacks, whale sharks and in the deep water canyons off Sodwana, the coelacanth. Too deep to dive but just knowing these primordial fish are so close adds an additional dimension to your dive. Night life can be enjoyed at the Sodwana Bay Lodge or at ‘Jan maak a jool’ for the younger set.

DAY THREE
MKHUZE GAME RESERVE

Break camp and make your way through Mbuzwana and around to Mkhuze Game Reserve via the link road between Mkhuze and Phinda. Going via Mkuze Village will allow you to replenish essential supplies. After booking in at Mantuma Camp set up camp in Emshopi Campsite in one of the shady sites. After lunch make your way to Kwamalibala Hide and spend an interesting afternoon watching the wildlife as it wanders in to drink from the water hole. Antelope, birds, insects, terrapins, there is always something interesting going on.

DAY FOUR
MKHUZE GAME RESERVE

Rise early and pack the skottle braai and supplies for breakfast and lunch for a day out in this beautiful reserve. Go past Mantuma Camp and take the loop road that runs along the Mkuze River flood plain. At the Nsumo pan picnic site, on the edge of the water relax for breakfast to the calls of fish eagles and hippos. This pan has wonderful birdlife and often rafts of white pelicans glide past fishing with oar like strokes of their large bills. The viewing platforms allow you an elevated view out over the the pan. The wildlife and vegetation in the area makes it an all day venue. On the way back take the short loop to the KwaJobe cultural village where you can an insight into the way the local people live as well as purchase authentic craft work as a memento of your visit.

DAY FIVE
MKHUZE GAME RESERVE

Enjoy breakfast at your campsite and then packing lunch and refreshments make your way to KwaBube Hide. This world famous hide where some wonderful wildlife photographs and films have been made will provide a series of interesting experiences as the animals and birds come to drink and react to each others presence. Move on to KwaMasinga Hide which will give you a change of scenery and an opportunity for refreshments at the picnic site. A slow drive back to camp in the late afternoon will allow you to cover some of the loop roads along the Lebombo Mountain range and an opportunity to see some of the animals that become active as the sun sets.

DAY SIX
FALSE BAY PARK

Break camp and leave the reserve to link up with the N2 highway. Head south and turn off into Hluhluwe Village. Some well stocked supermarkets allow you to stock up on supplies and then make your way along the road signposted False Bay Park. Set up camp under the spreading Albizia trees on the waters edge. Launch your boat from the slipway and spend the afternoon looking at the birdlife in this World Heritage Site as you fish this unique natural system.

DAY SEVEN
FALSE BAY PARK

Depending on tides and weather divide your day between fishing on the lake and bird watching on the well wooded shore as you walk the two trails that take you through the coastal grasslands, savannah and forest. As the sun sets, relax with sundowners on the viewing platform on the lakes edge and take in the sights and sounds of this unique place.
