CHELMSFORD (NTSHINGWAYO DAM) AND NCANDU
Situated on the Ngagane River in Northern Natal, Chelmsford is the third largest dam in
KwaZulu-Natal and offers a tranquil stretch of water suitable for all water sports especially water
skiing. Angling is a popular activity with good catches of carp and scalies reported regularly. The
reserve offers good game viewing opportunities and there are large herds of springbok, blesbok
and red hartebeeste as well as one of the most viable population of Oribi in the Province.
Chelmsford is one of the few protected areas in KwaZulu-Natal which offers regular hunting
opportunities with both meat and trophy packages being offered on tender annually. Accommodation
for hunters is provided at the Richgate hunting lodge on the Southern side of the dam. The camp at
Chelmsford consists of 8 five bedded fully equiped chalets set close to the waters edge with
beautiful views across the water on to the rolling hills and koppies of northern KwaZulu-Natal. At
Richgate there are four rustic 5 bed chalets available for hire as well as the Hunting lodge which
is available out of hunting season.
Camping is provided in two campsites, Leokop and Sandford, with both serviced and unserviced
sites available.
Situated on the Northern Drakensberg escarpment Ncandu reserve is managed as an extension of
Chelmsford. The area consists of steep forest filled gorges, divided by grassy plateaus with trails
that wander down through the sandstone cliffs into yellowwood forests and follow the Ncandu river
valley with its beautiful waterfalls. Accommodation is provided in a 4 bed rustic mountain hut.
Ncandu is 40 kilometres from Chelmsford where booking must be made.
