NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: BIODIVERSITY ACT,
2004
(ACT 10 OF 2004):
THREATENED OR PROTECTED SPECIES REGULATIONS
Regulations to empower the enforcement of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity
Act, 2004 (Act No. 10 of 2004) in relation to threatened or protected species has been passed by
parliament and will now come into force on the 1st of February 2008.
In order to give people time to study the regulations and become au fait with the
requirements, the Minister of Environmental Affiars and Tourism, has postponed the implementation
of the regulations on Threatened or Protected Species (ToPS) from the 1st of June 2007 to 1st of
February 2008. This will give the Issuing Authorities and the public alike, time to get prepared
for its implementation.
These THREATENED OR PROTECTED SPECIES REGULATIONS (TOPS) will have a direct bearing on the
permits issued by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife for the non-consumptive and consumptive use of
KwaZulu-Natal`s natural resources.
We urge all concerned to assess what permits they require and start applying early (about
October) for their respective permits via their local District Conservation Officer (DCO).
