MAPHELANA - CAMP SITE
Maphelana is the southernmost camp in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and is
tucked into a sheltered bay on the south bank of the Mfolozi River mouth.
It has long been a popular coastal break-away for camping, ski boating, surf angling, spear
fishing and many other many other off-shore activities.
Magnificent walks can be enjoyed through dense coastal forest in the area and avid birders
can look out for more than 200 bird species which have been recorded. Crocodiles and hippos abound
in the river.The sheltered bay provides a good launch site for ski-boats and is excellent for
swimming and snorkelling.
The access road to Maphelana is narrow and very sandy in places and is not suitable for
vehicles with low clearance, vehicles exceeding 1.5 tonnes, or boat trailers exceeding 5,8 metres.
Only single-axle class caravans towed by a 4X4 vehicle are allowed. Maphelana campsite is set in
the coastal forest near to the beach, with 40 various sized shady tent and caravan sites
accommodating up to six persons each. Electricity is restricted to generator times and there are no
plug points. Ablution facilities provide showers, flush toilets and dishwashing facilities.
