KOSI BAY NATURE RESERVE - CULTURE

In the northern KwaZulu-Natal areas, communities live very close to the beaches and are heavily reliant on the intertidal resources. Evidence of historical harvesting of mussels and other shell-fish (shell middens) can be seen on dune slopes at regular intervals along the coast. In places shards of pottery have been collected from the dunes, dating back to 300AD. The Thonga people still use fish kraals in the lakes at Kosi Bay and these have been passed down from father to son. Guests must not interfere with or disturb the fish kraals as this will create problems with the community.
