SWAINSON`S SPURFOWL

HABITAT
A fairly recent resident of KwaZulu-Natal that has colonised from the north down through the
agricultural areas of the province.
| It is found in a variety of habitats such as
grasslands, bushveld, riverine bush and agricultural lands.
TYPE
A medium sized francolin that is all brown with streaks of black. The bill is black above and
red below as is the face and throat. The legs and feet are black. Can be seen singly, in pairs or
in a covey of up to 8 birds.
FOOD
The food is varied consisting of seeds, berries, shoots, roots bulbs, insects and
molluscs.
BREEDING
They nest from February to May using a hollow in the ground lined with dry grass, hidden in
the grass or in brushwood. They lay anywhere from 4 to 12 pinkish to buffy cream eggs.
STATUS
A common resident with an expanding range. |
