EKZNW welcomes researchers!
Protected areas conserve relatively pristine and intact
natural systems thereby providing unique living laboratories for researchers to understand how
species and ecosystems function and interact. Their status as protected, lesser-disturbed,
and stably administered sites with well documented history of management makes them particularly
valuable for enquiry, and their role in this respect will only increase as the remainder of the
landscape becomes increasingly fragmented and impacted by the activities of man.
EKZNW is increasingly enlisting the skills and talents of
research partners to develop the scientific information needed to make effective biodiversity
management decisions (applied research). In addition, EKZNW has committed itself to making
protected areas available for research that benefits science and society as a whole (including so
called 'academic research').
To facilitate these dual responsibilities –"parks for science”
and “science for parks" – EKZNW is striving to make protected areas in KZN more accessible to
researchers.
