Rhino poaching arrest updates

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife today  arrested two suspects at Nkangala area, which is two kilometers outside of Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park (HiP). The arrest follows a tip off received from the community members.

The tip-off received in the early hours of this morning indicated that two suspicious men were hiking outside the reserve. Ezemvelo Anti Poaching Unit  (APU) wasted no time and on arrival at the hiking spot, which is 2KM outside of HiP, the Anti Poaching Unit noticed that the clothes of these two men were soaked in blood.

Following some questioning by Ezemvelo APU , the two men immediatley admitted to poaching a rhino and voluntarily led the APU to where they had hidden the horn. The APU is currently searching for a firearm and any tool that might have used. The search is being conducted with the assistance of the dogs and the two suspects.

This arrest follows on the heels of another arrest that was made yesterday morning at Makhamisa Section. At Makhamisa, Ezemvelo APU heard some gun shots around 1am on Monday morning. When they went towards where the gun sound came from they found themselves under fire from the poachers who narrowly missed them. The APU returned fire and wounded one suspect who was later arrested whilst the other  two managed to escape. A .375 rifle, a silencer and 14 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

Ezemvelo CEO, Dr Mabunda has congratulated the Anti Poaching Unit for their recent success. “ These arrests prove that our Anti Poaching Unit has not lost hope in its war against poaching. It would have been easier  for them to be dispondent by now but they continue putting their lives in danger. The intelligence information that the communities living adjacent to our game reserves continue to share with us has contributed immensely in our fight against this onslaught.” Dr. Mabunda concluded.

To date 119 rhinos have been poached in the KZN province and 80 arrests have been made so far.
