Special Precautions:
The weather is subject to change at short notice and can become very cold so hikers are advised to be well equipped and to fill in their details in the Mountain Rescue Register.

The nearest town which has a full range of services is Winterton which is 30 kms away.
There is a well stocked Supermarket a short distance away(10 minutes).

How to get there:
Durban to Monks Cowl:
Take the N3 from DBN, until you pass Escourt. Take the Estcourt North/Giants Castle turnoff to your left (just passed the Midway Caltex Garage).
Turn left toward Loskop.
Stay on this road (approx 20 min), until you get to a 4 way crossing.
Turn left onto the R600 (Thokozisa is on the corner on your left).
Stay on this road (R600) for approx 20 to 30 minutes. You will pass Champagne Sports Resort, and Champagne Castle Hotel and Monks Cowl is at the end of the road.

Gauteng to Monks Cowl:
Take the N3 from Gauteng to Harrismith. At Harrismith, turn right onto the N5 towards Bethlehem/Bloernfontein. Proceed for approx 5 km, turn left on the Bergville / Oliviershoek Pass road. Continue past Sterkfontein darn, down Oliviershoek Pass, towards Bergville and Winterton. At Winterton, turn right onto the R600, CENTRAL BERG road. Continue for approx 13 km to the crossroad, go straight past Thokozisa which is on the left, continue along this road for approx 20/30 miinutes -Monks Cowl is at the end of this road.

Pets are not permitted into the reserve.

"No entry fees will be charged for visits by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Primary and Secondary School groups, from KZN Schools to KZN Protected Areas and St Lucia Crocodile Centre provided that such visits:
1. are authorised by the Head of the school
2. are booked in advance with the Officer in Charge of the Protected Area or Crocodile Centre
3. do not take place over weekends, during KZN Provincial school holidays or Public Holidays".
