Overview......

Amatikulu Nature Reserve is situated on the Indian Ocean coastline in Northern KwaZulu-Natal between the Tugela and Amatikulu River mouths. The Reserve is approximately 100 km from Durban and is one of the few places in Southern Africa where wildlife can be viewed feeding on forested dunes overlooking the sea. Visitors can indulge in a variety of game drives (4 X 4 required) and self-guided walks through the many vegetation types found in the reserve. The Coastal Forest grasslands and rivers attract much birdlife, including the rare African finfoot, and populations of giraffe, zebra, waterbuck and smaller antelope. Other popular activities include canoeing on the Amatikulu Estuary and Nyoni River and easy access to the best surf angling beach. Fishing in the estuary is also extremely rewarding and a whale and game watching tower is situated quite close to the camp. Amatikulu Tented Camp is built on wooded platforms overlooking the Amatikulu River and has a panoramic view of the sea. This self catering bush camp has six comfortable and spacious 2-bedded tents furnished to rest camp standards and serviced daily. A communal ablution block, connected to the units by a boardwalk, has both hot and cold water with showers, toilets and hand basins. The Camp's kitchen is equipped with a gas stove, fridge and freezer as well as a good supply of crockery and cutlery. Visitors can prepare their food in the kitchen or they may cook it at the specially provided barbecue area. The dining area is furnished with tables and benches.

How to get there......		Gate Opening and Closing Times......

Take the N2 north from Durban and take the Nyoni off-ramp, turn right over the highway and proceed 3kms to the reserve's gate. The nearest town which has a full range of services is Gingingdlovu 15 kms away from the facility. Facilities......
A communal freezer is available in the camp kitchen.There is no shop in the camp and there are no facilities for people with disabilities.

Special precautions......

As crocodiles and bilharzia are found in the rivers, visiters are advised not to swim in the rivers or drink the river water and do so at their own risk. Pets are not permitted into the reserve

Standard Season......(Applicable throughout the year, effective 01 November - 31 October) *Low Season......(Discounted rates applies Sunday to Thursday inclusive, provided it is out of school holidays, long weekends, public holidays on Thursdat, Friday, Monday and Tuesday or during special events). Pensioner discount still applicable but no commission is paid suring this period. Children under 3 years old - no charge (entry and accommodation), Discounts apply on accommodation and camping for children aged 12 and under, registered students, and South African residents over 60 years of age at selected campgrounds and facilities. See DISCOUNTS below for applicable qualifications and discounts. DISCOUNTS A discount for children aged 12 or under is 50% of the standard tariff irrespective of the time of year or day of the week. Only applies to children sharing an accommodation unit with their parents or other adults. Does not apply to Wilderness Trails, overnight hiking (eg in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park), bush camps/lodges, tented bush camps/lodges. The discount for permanent residents of South Africa over the age of 60, and for students is 20% of the standard tariff. Does not apply to Wilderness Trails, overnight hiking (eg in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park), bush camps/lodges and tented bush camps/lodges or in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park. In the case of people over 60, and students, the discounts are applicable during weekdays (Sunday night to Thursday night) only, and also excludes public holidays, long weekends, and school holidays.
