The CEO of Ezemvelo, Dr Bandile Mkhize, signed an agreement with two organisations that will result in poor rural schools receiving at least two computers per school. The other two organisations involved are EOH Consulting, an IT Company and the Coastal KZN FET College. The signing ceremony was held at the offices of EOH-Unthombo in La Lucia.
Last year, Dr Mkhize made a promise to Buhlebezwe Municipality that Ezemvelo was going to donate at least two computers per school to all poor schools around the area. In its initial stage, Ezemvelo indicated that this will be achieved over five years. The signing of this agreement will now reduce the period to at least two and half years. Last year Ezemvelo partnered with Sanlam, Albaraka Bank and EOH Technologies and donated 40 computers to 20 poor schools around Buhlebuyeza Municipality.
According to this tripartite agreement, Coastal KZN FET College will donate their old computers to EOH Consulting. EOH Consulting will repair computers before passing them to Ezemvelo for final distribution to the needy schools that would have been identified by Ms Fundi Dlamini from Infrastructure, Projects and Partnerships Unit. Coastal KZN FET College will donate at 1000 computers to kick start the project. According to Dr Ntombela, who is the Rector of Coastal KZN FET College, the college buys new computers every three years and this means that this project will continue for a long time. “In fact what we are doing today will benefit us more than it will benefit any of the parties signing this agreement. What you will be doing is to prepare these kids by giving the computer skills so that when they come to tertiary institutions they already possess computer skills.” Dr Ntombela said.
On his part, Dr Mkhize indicated that once Ezemvelo has supplied all the rural schools within Buhlebezwe Municipality, the focus will shift to Jozini Municipality under uMkhanyakude District Municipality. The international acclaimed IT Company, IBM might become part of this initiative if the current discussion between EOH Consulting and IBM are successful. If an agreement is reached, IBM will also donate computers to Ezemvelo for distribution to the needy rural schools.
