Spioenkop Dam and Nature Reserve is situated in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, 35 km from Ladysmith and 14 km from Winterton. The reserve was established in July 1975 and is 6 000 ha in extent.
WHAT TO DO ON ARRIVAL
An entrance fee is payable at the entrance gate. Overnight visitors must check in at the office on arrival. Reception office hours are from 08:00 - 12:30 and 14:00 - 16:30 on weekdays and 08:00 - 12:00 and 14:00 - 16:00 on weekends and public holidays.
WHAT TO BRING
Visitor’s are advised to bring food, drinks, matches, swimming towels and a torch, especially during the summer months, as Eskom power is subject to interruptions due to storms. The nearest source of supplies and petrol is Winterton, 14 km from Spioenkop. Visitors intending to participate in boating must provide life jackets, which must be worn at all times, and skippers must be in possession of a valid skippers licence.
HOW TO GET THERE
From the south, turn off the N3 onto the R74 signposted Winterton. One kilometre past Winterton, cross the Little Tugela River and turn right onto the R600 signposted Spioenkop Dam. The reserve is approximately 13 km from the turn-off. From the north, turn off the N3 toll road at the Bergville off-ramp (R616). Turn left towards Ladysmith and follow this route for 5 km. Turn right onto the R600 signposted Spioenkop/Winterton. The reserve is 25 km from the turn-off. From Ladysmith, travel 2 km past Ladysmith on the R103 and turn right onto the Bergville road (R616). Travel another 10 km along this road. At the Spioenkop/Winterton signpost, turn left onto the R600 for a further 25 km until you reach the turn-off to the reserve.
- No pets are allowed into the reserve.
- Please note that there are no plug points for electric razors.
- Visitors should not walk beyond the vicinity after sunset, as potentially dangerous game frequents the camp grounds after dark, to graze the lawns and gardens.
- Entrance gates to the reserve open and close at the following times: Summer (1 October - 31 March) 05:00 - 19:00 Winter (1 April - 30 September) 06:00 - 18:00
