Warning to hikers on the Amphitheatre

Warning to hikers on the Amphitheatre

WARNING TO ALL CAMPERS ON THE AMPHITHEATRE.

Following the recent incidents of Campers at the Amphitheatre being attacked whilst camping, Ezemvelo has decided to issue these do’s and don’t’s that all campers need to be aware of. The current modus operandi of the suspected attackers at the Amphitheatre area is as follows:

· Aggressive begging for food or money at the Chain ladders. Some hikers have had stones thrown at them when descending after refusing to give food or money.
· Shepherds watching hiking parties late afternoon when they set up camp to see what can be stolen. Attacks then generally occur around 23h00 to 03h00.
· Some tents are cut open and items stolen.

Helicopters: Just one tool in the fight against poaching

Helicopters: Just one tool in the fight against poaching

Rhino poaching is a complex issue and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is implementing the necessary multipronged approach.

The frontpage article titled “Helicopters down — rhino poaching up” (The Witness, February 23) refers. It will be wrong for the current biodiversity leadership in our province, country and continent to remain silent and allow unscientific and untested artificial conjecture to be paraded as fact in the public domain and mislead the unsuspecting public.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, in partnership with a number of donors, introduced tracking dogs into the Park in December 2015. Working Dogs are widely recognised as both a strong deterrent to rhino poaching but also a remarkable reactive tool for tracking poachers down.
