GAME CAPTURE CENTRE
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park celebrated its 100 years of formal existance in 1994.
Among many other things, the park is famous for Operation Rhino that put the White Rhino beyond
the extinction that had threatened in the early years of the centuary when only 30 animals
survived.
Since the start of Operation Rhino in the 1960's, over 10 000 white rhino have been translocated
worldwide.
The dedicated KZN Wildlife game capture team now move 5000 to 6000 animals per year,
including antelope, black and white rhino, zebra, hippo and giraffe.
This has resulted in major contributions to South Africa's wildlife industry.
The need for improved game capture facilities with associated visitor and education
opportunities resulted in KZN Wildlife building the Centenary Centre in the eastern section of
Umfolozi.
The centre boasts state of the art rhino and antelope bomas which are open to the public between
April and July each year, has ample parking, a fast foods and refreshment kiosk, and a range of
Zulu handcrafts and authentic curios sold by local communities at the Vulamehlo Craft
Market.
The history of game capture and present day techniques are illustrated through videos and static
displays in the exhibition halls.
The centre is open daily from 08h00 to 16h00 as part of the Hluhluwe Umfolozi
experience.
Trained Community Guides take visitors on tours of the centre between 10h00 and 15h00 each day.
These young people are not paid by KZN Wildlife but depend on visitors tips for the service they
provide.
