Welcome to Kamberg

The surrounding landscape is rich in San (or Bushmen) history, with San raiding parties using the hills and valleys to hide cattle taken from settlers who had appropriated their land to the point where the San were no longer able to sustain themselves through their tradition hunter-gatherer lifestyle. The beautiful Mooi River runs through the nature reserve, adding significantly to the Kamberg experience by adding fly-fishing to the list of activities. Proclaimed in 1951, the reserve derives its name from a nearby mountain shaped like a rooster’s comb. (In Afrikaans “die haan se kam”). Game Pass Shelter, rich with highly significant San rock art was instrumental in enabling us to decipher the meanings of many of the San polychromatic images.

Trout Fishing

• Trout fishing is available in Eland and Erskine Dams which are open to anglers all year round.

• Mooi River has excellent seasonal trout fishing.

• Anglers may only use the correct fly fishing tackle and all anglers are required to pay a rod fee at the reception office before they start fishing.

• Rods are available for hire from the reception office.

San Rock Art

• Trained guides are available to take visitors to Game Pass Shelter (3 hours walk), to see rock art paintings which have been described as the Rosetta Stone of ancient Rock Art. Bookings can be made in advance through reception.

Hikes

• There are numerous scenic walks throughout the area ranging from short walks to all day hikes.

• The Mountain Rescue Register must to be completed before you begin your hike. Make sure correct details are filled in case of a rescue and ensure you sign out again when you return.

Game Viewing

• Wildlife occurring in the reserve includes reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, blesbok, black wildebeest, grey rhebuck, eland, duiker, red hartebeest and oribi.

Picnicking

• Three picnic sites along the Mooi river and around the trout dams provide a tranquil and scenic setting.

• Entrance gates to the park open and close at the following times:

       Summer (1 October - 31 March) 05:00 - 19:00 
       Winter (1 April - 30 September) 06:00 - 18:00

• No petrol available in the resort. The nearest supplies are obtainable at Rosetta, 42 km away.

• Office hours are between 08:00 - 16:00 daily, but closed between 13:00 - 14:00.

• Accommodation may be taken up after 14:00 on the day of arrival and must be vacated by 10:00 on the day of departure.

• The curio shop at the reception office supplies basic foods and some essentials. It is necessary to bring your own charcoal, food and beverages.

• Visitors who have reserved overnight accommodation must check in at the resort reception office.

• No pets are allowed into the reserve.

• No plug points for electric razors are available.

• The communal lounge has a large freezer and DSTV available to visitors.

• All units have fireplaces, wood may be purchased at the reception.

• Making fires is strictly limited to the designated picnic sites.

• A cot is available on request.
