Activities in Amatigulu

Visitors Activities

  • Visitors can indulge in a variety of activities including self-guided walks that take you through the many vegetation types found in the reserve.
  • There is also a trail that leads to the viewing platform that enables your to enjoy breath-taking views of the reserve.
  • The Coastal Forest and grassland attract a variety of birdlife which will satisfy the keen bird watcher.
  • There is a thriving population of reedbuck and giraffe, as well as zebra, waterbuck, kudu and a number of small antelope in the reserve.
  • Visitors with 4x4 vehicles may also drive to the Matshangulo Pan.
  • Other activities include canoeing (for hire from local community) on the Amatigulu Estuary and Nyoni River; however no motor boats are permitted in the river, only canoes or non motor boats.
  • Water sports such as skiing, yachting, board sailing, jet-skiing etc. are not permitted.
  • Fishing in the estuary is also extremely rewarding.
  • Please note that marine fishing permits are now required for sea and estuary fishing.
  • These are available from Post Office and the Umlalazi Nature Reserve reception office.
  • There are community based tour guides for those who would like more information on the birdlife in the reserve.
