Welcome to Spioenkop

Spioenkop Dam and Nature Reserve is situated in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, 35 km from Ladysmith and 14 km from Winterton. The reserve was established in July 1975 and is 6 000 ha in extent.

    • Spioenkop Dam is ideally suited to boating, but may become very rough due to berg winds between August and October.
    • Life jackets must be carried on board and be worn at all times.
    • There are self-guided trails available.
    • The Siege of Ladysmith museum is also worth a visit.
    • Visitors may enjoy game viewing with a variety of game and bird (270) species occurring in the reserve.
    • Angling is permitted. Only during the daylight, No night fishing with a boat is permitted.
    • Over night fishing can only be done from land within the campsite vacinity.

    Battlefield

    • For those interested in KwaZulu-Natal’s history, the area is rich in historical significance. Spioenkop Battlefield, (24 January 1900), overlooks the dam and is clearly visible from the reserve. Other battlefields dating from the Second Anglo Boer War, are also in close proximity to the reserve. They are; Colenso (15 December 1899), Vaalkrans (5-7 February 1900) and Pieter’s Hill (27 February 1900). A booklet on the Battle of Spioenkop is available from the curio shop.
  • Useful Info

    • Visitor’s are advised to bring food, drinks, matches, swimming towels and a torch, especially during the summer months, as Eskom power is subject to interruptions due to storms.
    • The nearest source of supplies and petrol is Winterton, 14 km from Spioenkop.
    • A registered boat club operates at the dam, but boaters need not be a club member.
    • Visitors intending to participate in boating must provide life jackets, which must be worn at all times, and skippers must be in possession of a valid skippers licence.
    • Boats must be registered with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
    • Please note that there are no boats for hire.
