Established in 1975, Weenen Game Reserve is 5 000 ha in extent. This area of attractive, undulating thornveld is a valuable addition to the nature conservation areas of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

  • 5 Campsite without plug points

    There is a campsite comprising 14 shaded campsites, each equipped with electric power points and barbeque stands. The campsite caters for both caravans and tents and is situated in a beautiful setting under the trees near the resort. Campers can make use of communal ablutions used by guests in hutted accommodation.

Activities in Weenen

  • There are 30 km of tourist roads available to view a wide variety of game

  • Species include black and white rhino, giraffe, kudu, hartebeest, eland, zebra, ostrich and common reedbuck; whilst such species as grey duiker, bushbuck, steenbuck, black-backed jackal, hyeana and mountain reedbuck have recolonised the area naturally.

  • Over 250 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve. Three picnic sites with toilets, running cold water, and barbeque facilities are available; one is at a view site overlooking the Bushman’s River valley.

  • Two game viewing hides (Ufudu and Mpofu) are situated at watering holes where several species of mammals and a variety of water fowl can be viewed.

  • The reserve also offers a self-guided auto trail for which a brochure may be obtained at the gate.
  • Weenen Useful Information

  • The village of Weenen, 8 km away, has a general dealer store, garage and tearoom.

  • No pets are allowed into the reserve.

  • Night drives are strictly prohibited within the reserve.

  • Cold drinks, ice, firelighters, matches and firewood are sold at the entrance gate.

  • Motorcycles are not permitted in the reserve.

  • Day visitors must vacate the reserve, (for overnighting visitors, be back in the accommodation area) by sundown.

  • Caravanners and campers may not leave the reserve before the official reception office opening time.

  • Campers arriving after closing time cannot be accommodated.

  • No fishing is permitted in the reserve.

  • Entrance gates to the reserve open and close at the following times:

  • Summer (1 October - 31 March) 05:00 - 19:00
    Winter (1 April - 30 September) 06:00 - 18:00
