Welcome to Maphelane

Maphelane is situated on the south bank of the Mfolozi River mouth. It is the southernmost resort in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first world heritage site, recognized for its superlative natural beauty, ecological processes and biodiversity, covers 332 000 ha and includes a coastline of 230 km.

The bay at Mapelane is sheltered be an immensely tall, forested sand dune to the south and seaward by a low reef, which is largely exposed at low tides. This provides a sheltered launch area for ski-boats and ideal place for swimming and snorkelling.

Maphelane Accommodation

    There are ten fully self-contained unit that consists of two bedrooms, a lounge/dining room, kitchen and bathroom.

  • Campsites

    The campground has 40 campsites without plug points. The site are suitable for caravans, with exception of 7 sites that are suitable for tents only. The ablution blocks have hot and cold water.

Activities in Maphelane

  • There is excellent ski-boat and surf fishing at Maphelane.

  • Only three jet skis are permitted per day for fishing.

  • It is considered safe to swim at low tide, but please note there are no shark nets or life guards present.

  • There is a short self-guided trail leading to a viewsite on the dune and the roads can also be used for walking. Umphafa Trail is a self-guided trail and takes approximately two hours, walking at an easy pace.

  • Experience the excellent birdlife and magnificent trees and watch for the elusive red duiker.

  • Over 200 species of birds have been identified in this area.

  • Maphelane Useful Information

  • The entrance gate is managed by the iSimangaliso Wetland authority and gate entry times are strictly enforced:

  • Summer (1 October - 31 March) 05:00 - 19:00
    Winter (1 April - 30 September) 06:00 - 18:00
  • An entrance fee is payable at the gate.

  • On Friday evenings and evenings prior to long weekends or provincial school holidays, visitors with bookings may enter the reserve up to 21:00.

  • The road is in a poor condition and currently only accessible with a 4 x 4 vehicle.

  • The water is not suitable for human consumption, guests must supply their own. Water is also sold at the curio shop.

  • Please consult a General Practitioner regarding anti-malaria precautions before entering the area.

  • A speed limit of 20 km/h is strictly enforced, except where lower speeds are applicable.

  • Driving on the beach is not permitted other than for boat launching.

  • Power-boat skippers are required to be in possession of a valid skipper’s licence.

  • Visitors swim in the sea at their own risk. Swimming or wading in the Mfolozi River is not permitted due to crocodiles.

  • Visitors are not permitted to use their own generators.

  • There are no fuel or power points at the campsites.

  • Plug points for freezer facilities are available for hire, book direct with Maphelane.
  • Electricity is supplied by generator to the cabins which operates between 05:30 and 22:30 daily.

  • A well stocked curio shop with all basic necessities is available.

  • Please note that fishing permits are available at most Post Offices and not at Maphelane.

  • No pets are permitted in the reserve.

  • Littering is an offence.
