Highmoor is situated in the central region of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park, South Africa’s first cultural and environmental World Heritage Site. The reserve is 14 749 ha in extent and offers the visitor a variety of experiences. It is renowned for its excellent trout dams and scenic views.

The exceptional natural beauty of the Maloti- Drakensberg Park is evident in its soaring basaltic buttresses, golden sandstone ramparts, rolling high altitude grasslands, steep-sided river valleys and rocky gorges. The area has incredibly rich biodiversity including many endemic species.

Parking

Private parking is possible at a location nearby (reservation is not needed) and costs USD 28.80 per day.

Highmoor Activities

  • Wildlife that occurs in the reserve includes species such as grey rhebuck, Cape clawless otter, common and mountain reedbuck, eland, grey duiker, oribi, mongoose and baboon.
  • A variety of birds can also be seen including black stork, Verreaux’s eagle, bearded vulture, lanner falcon, Cape vulture and giant kingfisher.

  • Many delightful walks may be undertaken and there are excursions of this nature to suit all ages. It is advisable to carry warm clothing at all times as the weather is often unpredictable.

  • A picnic area is situated just outside the car park next to the office.

  • Two caves are available for overnighting. Caracal Cave accommodates 12 people and is approximately a 3,5 km walk from the camp office. Aasvoëlkrans Cave accommodates 12 people and is approximately 4 km from the camp office. This is an easy hike and is ideal for novices and family groups. Bookings need to be made through the reception office.

  • PLEASE NOTE: The Mountain Rescue Register must to be completed before you begin your hike. Make sure you sign out again when you return. All overnight hikers are to ensure that the Mountain Rescue Register is completed before undertaking their hike. Ensure that you complete the Mountain Rescue Register correctly and in detail. It is very often the only information the rescue team has to go on if you have an accident or get lost. When you leave the park, it is essential that you record your return in the Mountain Rescue Register. Failure to do so wastes valuable time for managers during rescue operations. Your life may depend on this information. Hikers should hike in parties of three or more individuals.


    • Fishing

  • Two well stocked trout dams are available for fishing. The open seasons are between 1 March - 31 June and 1 September - 31 December. Only fly fishing tackle and techniques are permissible. Trout anglers are required to pay a daily rod fee, which can be paid at the camp office.


    • Highmoor Useful Information

  • No pets of any kind are permitted in the reserve.

  • For safety reasons, hikers should hike in parties of three or more individuals.

    • Summer (1 October - 31 March) 05:00 - 19:00
    Winter (1 April - 30 September) 06:00 - 18:00
